Ilfracombe probably saw its best days in the late 1800s, but still offers a great deal for modern day visitors. Not only is there a lot ice cream licking and pasty munching to do, but Ilfracombe has embraced the modern era - mainly by investing in a theatre that looks like Madonna’s pointy bra. You can’t get much more modern than that, eh?
It also offers some great old hotels, and even a hostel if you’re watching the pennies. Ocean Backpackers is a family run establishment with some bargain beds and family rooms.
Don’t miss the lovely old harbour (which would be impossible anyway), and check out Damien Hurst’s eatery; and no, sliced shark in vinegar is not on the menu.
There are also some amazing coastal walks to enjoy, though going east might be a bit more strenuous. There’s nothing like seeing the cows munching away on the high, green grassy areas that overlook the Bristol Channel – a really beautiful spot!
