Winter might be starting to cause havoc with its delivery of snow and ice and windy, cold weather, but there are still some fantastic places to enjoy a weekend break.
Cambridge is one of those places, and as well as offering some of the prettiest, most ancient streets in England, it is a great time to visit during the winter. There’s nothing like enjoying a bright, wintry day on the River Cam, being punted along and taking in the world famous views of educational prowess.
Together with amazing history, you also have access to some of the UK’s very best restaurants and pubs, where you can rub shoulders with students who will one day go on to run the UK – as well as countless people from around the globe.
Yet Cambridge is decidedly English: you won’t finder a more English selection of public houses and eateries offering the very best in modern British cuisine.
Make sure you wrap up warm, and enjoying a February weekend break in Cambridge will surely be one to remember.

Ightham Mote is a little known treasure of British history, lovingly restored by the National Trust. It is a private house surrounded by a mote (hence the name) which is one of England’s oldest country houses. Built in the 14th century, the house is ideal for a weekend break, especially if you combine it with a trip to Canterbury too. If you have a car you will find Ightham Mote and nearby Canterbury easy to get to, but arriving by public transport might prove a little more challenging.
However you get to these destinations, most of those who have visited the house would recommend it is worth the effort. Inside, there are a great many things to enjoy, including a painting by none other than Sir Winston Churchill (it’s actually quite good) and a huge dog kennel in the courtyard. It will take a good few hours to fully appreciate, especially if you want to take in the beautiful gardens and have something to eat or drink in the adjacent tea room.
If you’re into your UK history, this one may well surprise you in its level of completeness. Combined with a trip to Canterbury, you’re looking at a very pleasant weekend away indeed. Visit the National Trust for more information.
